Mission Statement

To offer low-cost clothing and household items to generate funds for  emergency and supplemental food assistance.

...Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and    whoever has food must do likewise."  (Luke 3:11)

Our Vision:  To complement existing community, social, and faith based  efforts in assisting others in need as an expression of Christian witness.

History

The first volunteers from St. Matthews by the Sea (SMBTS) opened the doors of the Samaritan Thrift Shop (STS) in July 2008 in a 2000 square foot building adjacent to Bayside Chapel (Mission church of SMBTS) in Williamsville Industrial Park.  STS has since, not only survived, but grew such that a move to a larger facility, also in Williamsville Industrial Park, became necessary.  In less than 2 years of moving to the new building, continued rapid growth required expanding even further to include the entire building of approximately 6000 square feet.

In addition to the main sales floor, a separate room is dedicated to furniture and related accessories such as linens, lamps and pictures, some gardening tools and other non-furniture home necessities.  STS also experienced significant growth in donations which required the inclusion of a separate processing room where donations are accepted.

STS employs a Director, Assistant Director and more than 60 volunteers from SMBTS and the surrounding community.  Funds raised through sales at the STS are divided among local food pantries who make timely written requests for assistance in providing food for their respective missions.  All requests are reviewed and requirements must be met in order to be included in the year end distribution.  Funding is determined on an annual basis and is not automatically renewable.

Volunteer Opportunities

Samaritan Thrift Shop is always seeking new volunteers to help keep the store running smoothly and to provide friendly, helpful assistance to our customers.  There is a variety of duties to choose from, including accepting donations, sorting, pricing and stocking clothing and other merchandise; or working in the store front as cashier, assisting with bagging and keeping the sales floor stocked, or helping customers, as necessary.  Hours are flexible to meet your schedule, either morning or afternoon shifts, weekly, or as often as your time permits.  We do ask that volunteers work a three hour shift.   Applications are available at the cashier desk.  Please consider joining us.
